From April 2005 all newly installed boilers must be high efficiency condensing boilers rated A or B, with very few exceptions
.

What is a high efficiency condensing boiler?

Condensing boilers recover as much heat as possible from the waste heat normally rejected into the flue. This ability to extract more heat from the gas used makes these boilers between 86% to above 90% efficient depending on the individual boiler. Compare this to many older boilers still in use in the UK, these operate at as low as 50% efficient, this means that for every £1 spent on fuel 50p worth is lost through the flue. The average boiler used today is running at about 70% - 75% efficiency which is still not good enough.

By replacing your average old boiler with an energy efficient condensing boiler you will be saving about a third on your fuel bill and even more if you install modern controls.

Did you know?

The waste discharged through the flues of domestic central heating boilers account for 21%* of the UK’s total emissions of carbon dioxide.

If everyone in the UK with gas central heating installed a high efficiency boiler, we would save enough energy to heat 3.7 million homes for a year.

So, what do they look like?

Don’t worry; they look just like... a boiler!  except that they have the benefit of the latest technology in design and construction so look sleek and modern and would fit alongside  any modern appliance. They also come in a huge range of sizes and outputs to meet the varied demands of the customer. We provide our customers with a brochure showing pictures, dimensions and other various technical details to help you with your choice.

What else do I need to know?

A condensing boiler requires a condensate pipe to carry away the small amount of liquid produced during condensation. This is provided by your installer and taken to a suitable drain. A condensing boiler will also produce more pluming than a regular boiler, this happens when the flue gas temperature drops below the dew point and will appear as steam from the flue outlet. Flue emissions from a condensing boiler are cooler because as much heat as possible has been retained to heat your home. The pluming is not harmful in anyway but this must be taken into consideration when positioning the flue. Plume management kits are available for use, if necessary.
